Lion Rescued from the Mowgli Zoo: Frostbitten Legs, Broken Tail, Beaten Muzzle, Throat AbscessOn April 24, in Kiev, near the building of the National Opera of Ukraine, the activists of ecological organizations (“The Voice of Nature”, ”NECU”, “MOTHER-86”, “Ecoclub”, “BAKHMAT”) organized the strike of the international conference “The Chernobyl catastrophe is 20 years old. A look into future”.
Public ecologists are revolted by the data, that were given by UN and IAEA about the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, and also about the plans of Ukrainian government to build 22 new nuclear reactors by 2030.
The UN and IAEA`s experts doubted in the influence of radiation on the people’s health and on future generations. However, the given data don’t coincide with the data of Ukrainian state organs. By the 1st of January 2005, the number of injured people on the Chernobyl nuclear station was about 2,646 mln.people in Ukraine. As the experts think, there are no more 600,000 of such people. 17,488 people have died as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, but the UNO`s expert consider that there are only 59 of such people.
The UN`s report can not be considered the objective one, because the experts didn`t pay attention to the influence of small doses of radiation on the gene pool, these consequence are cleared up only the long time later.
UN`s report caused the critics not only among the Ukrainian ecologists. From the 23rd till 25th of April the alternative conference “Chernobyl +20: a memory for the future”. Was organized in Kiev. The politicans the scientists, the experts, the leaders of public ecological organizations, the writers and journalists took part in the work of the conference. The international organization “Greenpeace” presented the real data about the number of injured people because of the Chernobyl disaster at the conference. More than 60 outstanding scientists gave their data to “Greenpeace” about the consequences of the disaster which are rather different from the UN`s and IAEA`s report.
Only the analysis of the cancer disaster showed that more than 100000 of fatal cases from the cancer are connected with the Chernobyl disaster nowadays. In last 15 years the Chernobyl disaster caused 60000 fatal cases in Russia, and 140000 fatal cases in Ukraine and Belorussia.
The Chernobyl disaster is not casual. Nowadays there are practically no days in the calendar, that don`t have the nuclear incident: there are accidents at the nuclear stations and submarines, the leakages of radioactive matters from remaking enterprices and nuclear storehouses, the catastrophes while the transporting of worked up nuclear fuel. These accidents happened and will happen in countries, that are being developed now, and also in highly-developed countries, which have a high level of the enterprise culture and reliable safe systems. It`s impossible to exclude the “human factor” completely, that`s why nobody can say about the complete safety of nuclear stations and nuclear storehouses. The catastrophe can happen in any country at any moment.
Ukraine can`t liquidate the consequences of Chernobyl disaster and can`t solve the problem of safe nuclear wastes storage itself, however, the government is going to build 22 new nuclear reactors by 2030.
Ukraine has a great potential in the field of energysaving and renewable energetics. Middle energy losses in municipal sector are 40-60%.
The power intensity of the national enterprises is 5-7 times higher, that in Europe. Ukraine produces sun collectors and wind turbine, but sun and wind energetics doesn`t have a real support of the state. The analysis of the potential renewable energy sourses shows that the crisis in the energetic sector can be completely surmounted with help of introduction of energy saving technologies and development of renewable energetics.
The plans of building new nuclear reactors don`t coincide with the interests of Ukrainian society. The citizens of Dneprodzerzhinsk are worried by the government`s wish to reconstruct the uranium producing in our city andto work up new uranium deposits in Dnepropetrovsk region. Nowadays the activists “The Voice of Nature” are gathering the appeals of the citizens to the government demanding the refusal of crazy plans to develop the nuclear potential.
According to the citizens`opinion, “The Voice of Nature” with other ecological organizations will demand the Cabinet of Ministers to work up a new strategy with an advantage of energy saving and renewable energetics, but not the building of new nuclear reactors.
